I came across this in the classroom, among a stack of drying Key Stage 3 student work, the other day. Not just me then...
It's pure coincidence, of course - I honestly had no input. What it really does, is emphasise the purely formal appeal of the 'Union Jack' motif as a way of dividing a composition, when divested of any other associations. The use of a nuanced field or screen of visual marks, to modulate a more dominant motif, is something that never really wears out too. That's certainly something I'm constantly playing with, to varying degrees, in my own flags.
Oh, yeah - the combination of painting, print and collage in the same piece is good to see too. It's all good, in fact.
